“In München gibt es Volksabstimmungen über Themen, die die Stadt und die Lebensqualität der Menschen betreffen. Über Ereignisse wie die Olympischen Spiele zum Beispiel. Ich finde es toll, wie sehr die Menschen in die Politik eingebunden werden. In Portugal haben wir Wahlen und danach machen die Politiker, was sie wollen. Sie denken kurzfristig und versuchen, dass die Situation in den drei, vier Jahren bis zur nächsten Wahl stabil bleibt. Aber das ist nicht gut. Wir brauchen wenigstens mittelfristige Lösungen für unsere Probleme. Ich denke, Deutschland ist besser darin, Politik über einen längeren Zeitraum zu machen. Hier müssen die Politiker über die Grenzen ihrer Parteien hinaus zusammen arbeiten. Sie müssen Verbündete in der Opposition finden und als Gemeinschaft wirken. In Portgual arbeiten die Politiker oft nur für das Foto.”
“In Munich, they make referenda about topics that concern the city and the peoples’ quality of life. Events like the Olympics, for instance. I really like how involved people are in politics. In Portugal, we have elections and afterwards the politicians do what they want. They are thinking in the short-term, attempting to make things work for the three or four years until the next election. But that’s not good. We need to find solutions for our problems in the mid-term at least. I think Germany is better at making politics for a longer period of time. Here the politicians need to work together across the borders of their political parties. They have to find allies in the opposition and work collectively. In Portugal, they often just work for the photograph.”
